Is It Time to Let Business Go Casual?

I keep seeing posts — this is purely anecdotal — about how people are skiving off when they work at home. Apparently, people watch television. They sneak naps. They pay bills. They never get out of their jammies. And yet, statistically speaking, people are more productive at home than they are at work. Study after study supports the increased productivity stats. So, what’s happening here?

I am reminded of how general wisdom insists women are more emotional while I am watching Ketanji Brown Jackson keep it super cool during some deeply irrational questioning in the hearing on her Supreme Court nomination. We fall back on old ideas despite mountains of evidence that the opposite is true.

It makes me wonder: will anything really change as we go forward?

My personal situation is such that I need to work remotely or in a minimal hybrid situation to reduce my exposure to any new covid strain coming through. Despite being fully vaccinated and already thinking about our next booster, I have to be careful because my partner’s health is seriously compromised. I have to balance my risks, partially because I have to take the bus but, also, because any significant time spent indoors increases the risk of catching Covid. So, working in an office all day is a problem.
